New Delhi: Tension seems to be increasing once again regarding the ceasefire agreement between America and Iran in June. Both countries are accusing each other of violating the terms of the agreement. While US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of not abiding by the agreement, Tehran says that America went back on its promises and continued the policy of military pressure and sanctions.
Meanwhile, the statement of former Israeli negotiator Daniel Levi has given a new turn to this controversy. He claims that America itself failed to implement many important provisions of the agreement, which weakened Iran’s confidence and increased the tension between the two countries.
What was the purpose of the agreement
According to reports, the interim agreement signed in June was aimed at reducing the rising military tension between the two countries. However, after some time both sides started accusing each other of violating the agreement. Iran says that America is working contrary to the spirit of the agreement by continuing military activities and imposing new sanctions. In response, America alleges that Iran first violated the agreement by attacking commercial ships and other targets.
The biggest center of dispute remains the Hormuz waterway. There was a provision in the agreement to ensure safe movement of commercial ships passing through this sea route. But after the recent attacks, both sides are blaming each other for these incidents, which has further weakened the trust in the ceasefire.
Promises were not fulfilled
In an interview, Daniel Levy said that America did not appear fully committed to implementing some of the key terms of the agreement. According to him, instead of the sea route mentioned in the agreement, America insisted on adopting a different route for the ships, which was not part of the original agreement. He also alleged that promises like freeing Iran’s assets were not fulfilled.
Levi believes that due to these incidents, Iran got the message that America does not want to implement the agreement honestly. Due to this, mistrust between the two countries has increased further and there is a possibility of tension in the region increasing once again. At present, both the countries are accusing each other of breaking the agreement, while the future of the ceasefire remains uncertain.
