Guwahati. The flood waters in Assam have now started receding rapidly, but the appearance of the flood affected areas has completely changed.
The standing crops in the fields have been ruined, while a new challenge has arisen due to the silt brought with the water in houses, roads and schools.
A void is visible in the eyes of the affected citizens. The government is continuously claiming to take every possible step, yet the situation has created a new challenge.
According to the data released by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on July 26, two more deaths have been confirmed in the state.
Thus, the total number of deaths in the state so far has reached 68. Dhansiri (Numaligarh) river in Assam is flowing above the danger mark.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma told through social media on Sunday night that after the budget session of the Assembly, all the ministers of the state will visit the flood affected areas and assess the situation.
At present, a total of nine districts are still badly affected by the floods, which include Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Hojai, Kamrup, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metro) and Dibrugarh districts.
A total of 763 villages in 24 revenue divisions of nine districts are affected by the floods. A total of 524733 population and 48742.09 hectares of agricultural land in the state are submerged in water.
The state government has set up a total of 345 camps, including 109 relief camps and 245 relief distribution centres, for the flood-affected people. 37724 people are taking shelter in relief camps. 153833 non-camp residents are receiving relief at relief distribution centres.
On July 26 also, two bodies were recovered from flood waters in Charaideo district. The total number of animals affected by the flood has been recorded as 88240, of which big animals are 45895, small ones are 26335 and poultry are 16010.
Meanwhile, a total of 26512 animals were washed away in the flood waters. 9973 animals in Charaideo district and 165395 animals in Sivasagar district have been washed away in water.
As of July 26, the total number of kutcha houses completely damaged in flood waters is reported to be 579, of which 19 are in Jorhat and 560 are in Sivasagar. The total number of partially damaged kutcha houses is 1560.
In which 60 in Jorhat district and 1500 in Sivasagar district. The total number of partially pucca damaged houses is 51. In which there are 06 in Jorhat district and 45 in Sivasagar district.
Other houses damaged include 250 huts and other cattle sheds in Sivasagar district, the total number of which is 792. In which 250 cases have been reported in Sivasagar district and 12 in Jorhat district.
SDRF, Army/Paramilitary Forces, NDRF, DDRF, Air Force, Police, Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES), Circle Office/Local Administration, Civil Defence/trained volunteers and Fire Department are mobilized for relief and rescue operations.
Meanwhile, the state government deployed a total of 152 medical teams in the flood affected areas. During this period, 36 boats were also engaged in relief work. Two helicopters have also been deployed to speed up the relief work.
Rice (in quintals): 3302.548, pulses (in quintals): 590.998, salt (in quintals): 177.3761, mustard oil (in litres): 17735.95 as well as animal fodder – wheat bran (in quintals): 446.24 are being provided by the state government to the flood affected people. And animal feed – rice bran (in quintals): 146.21 relief materials distributed.
The flood has caused extensive damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure. To repair it, the government is constantly holding review meetings and taking stock of the situation.
