CWG 2026: Mirabai Chanu gives India its first gold, becomes champion for the third consecutive time in Commonwealth Games

New Delhi: India’s legendary weightlifter Mirabai Chanu performed brilliantly in the Commonwealth Games 2026 and won the first gold medal for the country. By winning gold in the women’s 48 kg weight category, Mirabai achieved the distinction of becoming champion for the third consecutive time in the Commonwealth Games.

With this achievement he completed his golden hat-trick by winning consecutive gold medals in 2018, 2022 and now 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Made a new record twice in the snatch round

Mirabai Chanu started the competition by choosing the highest weight of 82 kg, due to which she came on the stage after other players. During this period, rival players from Nigeria and Sri Lanka could not succeed in their efforts.

In the snatch round, Mirabai created a new record twice in a row by lifting 82 kg in the second attempt and 85 kg in the third attempt. After this performance she became the strongest contender for the gold medal.

Won gold with a strong comeback in clean and jerk

Mirabai chose 105 kg weight in the clean and jerk round. She could not succeed in the first attempt, but made a brilliant comeback in the second attempt and successfully lifted 105 kg and registered India’s first gold medal.

New history created in Commonwealth Games

Mirabai Chanu improved her own record by lifting first 82 kg and then 85 kg during the competition. This achievement earns him a special place in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

She added another memorable chapter to the history of Indian weightlifting by winning the gold medal in her third consecutive Commonwealth Games.

Rishikant Singh won silver medal

On the fourth day of the Commonwealth Games 2026, India got another success in the men’s 60 kg weightlifting event. Rishikant Singh performed brilliantly in his very first Commonwealth Games, lifting a total weight of 264 kg (121 kg snatch + 143 kg clean and jerk) and won the silver medal.

Important news also came from lawn balls and swimming

In the women’s pairs sectional play match of lawn bowls, India’s pair of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinky Singh had to face defeat 0-3 against Namibia in the match which lasted till tiebreak.

In swimming, India’s team of Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Anish Gowda and Dakshan Sasikumar qualified for the finals by finishing third in the men’s 4×200 meter freestyle relay heats.
