Online jewelery buyers beware! Risk of cancer due to dangerous adulteration
The trend of ordering essential items online has increased significantly in the last few years. Be it household ration, clothes or medicines, everything is available online. But do you know that fake jewelery is being sold on many online delivery platforms, which poses a risk of serious diseases like cancer? Know and get to the bottom of this whole matter.
A shocking case has come to light in Britain: It is said that if artificial jewelery like necklace, ring and earrings are used for a long time then the risk of cancer increases. Here we are talking about jewelery available online in which 9000 times more cadmium was added than the prescribed limit. This case has come to light in Britain, where cadmium or lead was mixed in fake jewelery being sold online and in the local market. The limit of cadmium adulteration there is set at 0.01 percent, but what was revealed during the investigation was very shocking.

What did the research reveal? A research conducted by ‘The Sunday Times’ published a report on excessive adulteration of cadmium in artificial jewellery. According to this report, such rings, necklaces and earrings were being sold on popular online platforms which had cadmium adulteration 9000 times more.

According to the rules, artificial jewelery in Britain should not contain more than 0.01 percent cadmium. But investigation revealed that the product being sold as ‘925 silver’ i.e. made of 92.5 percent silver was actually not 92 percent silver but poisonous cadmium. In addition, 3300 times more cadmium was found in one bracelet. Following investigation, all these products were withdrawn from the market.

Risk of cancer, kidney and liver disease: The UK Health Protection Agency says that long-term use of cadmium metal in any form can cause not only cancer, but also serious diseases related to the kidneys and liver. Professor Christer Hoogstrand of King’s College London said such heavy metals could cause kidney cancer. In addition to causing liver damage, these toxins also make people susceptible to osteoporosis, a disease that weakens the bones.

The biggest risk is in the use of earrings: The report says that among this type of jewellery, earrings pose the highest risk. Due to pierced ears, the earrings come in direct contact with the skin. In this way poisonous metals easily enter the body. Experts say that artificial jewelery is also used on a large scale in India, hence the level of adulteration of heavy metals here is a matter of concern in itself.
