Jantar Mantar violence: Case registered against protesting students still intact, waiting for government order

Tezzbuzz Desk- There has been no relief so far in the cases related to the violence that took place during the protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The FIRs registered against the protesting students have not been withdrawn yet. Delhi Police says that it has not yet received any official instructions from the Central Government to withdraw the cases. As soon as the order is received, the legal process will be initiated.

According to Delhi Police, around 20 cases have been registered in connection with the Jantar Mantar protest and incidents related to it. Of these, 14 FIRs are related to demonstrations and violence. Apart from this, one case has been registered of flying a drone without permission, while other cases include allegations of attacks on journalists and policemen. According to sources, after getting the government’s approval, Delhi Police will send a letter to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) on behalf of the prosecution and tell the court that it does not want to take further action in these cases. Only after the approval of the LG, the concerned court will take the final decision whether the cases should be withdrawn or not.

However, FIRs filed by individual journalists will not be part of this process. Police say only cases registered by Delhi Police will be considered for withdrawal. To withdraw the cases of journalists, the consent of the concerned complainants will be required. Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has accused the government of not following the alleged agreement reached with the protesters. Party spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka tagged Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh on social media platform X and said that the promise of not taking police action against the protesters was being violated.

Ranka claimed that hundreds of students have been arrested in Bihar and West Bengal, while protesters and the volunteers helping them are facing surveillance and interrogation in several states, including Delhi. He alleged that the volunteers providing logistics support related to the movement in Delhi are also being detained. CJP has demanded that all FIRs registered against the protesters should be immediately withdrawn, the arrested students should be released and no new cases should be registered against them in future also. The party says that this demand should apply to Delhi Police, central agencies and police of BJP ruled states.

Also, the organization has demanded the government to make public the written agreements and fixed deadlines related to legal matters. Ranka warned that if the government did not fulfill its promises, students and organizations would be forced to launch large-scale protests again. At present, everyone’s eyes are fixed on the next step of the Central Government and the official instructions given to Delhi Police.
