glasgow27 july. Indian weightlifters performed brilliantly and won two medals on the fifth day of the Commonwealth Games 2026 here on Monday. Among these, Gyaneshwari Yadav won the silver medal amid record-breaking performance in the women’s 53 kg weight category, while Bindiarani Devi won the bronze medal in the 58 kg weight category. Meanwhile, the athletes raised hopes for the country by making it to the finals and boxers to the quarter-finals.

India ranked ninth with 6 medals including one gold
If we look at the medal table, India is at ninth position with a total of six medals including one gold, three silver and two bronze. Of these, weightlifters have won five medals including one gold and three silver. At the same time, Australia, which is progressing rapidly, has won 59 medals (26-13-20) till the last news. England, ranked second, has 29 medals (8-12-9) while Canada is at third place with 21 medals (7-8-6).

Asian bronze winner Dnyaneshwari lifted a total weight of 199 kg.
Asian Championship bronze medalist Dnyaneshwari won the silver medal amidst a series of records being made and broken. The 23-year-old lifter from Bhondiya village of Chhattisgarh lifted a total of 199 kg weight including 88 kg in snatch and 111 kg in clean and jerk.

Nigeria’s Onome breaks Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games record
Onome Omolola of Nigeria won the gold medal by lifting 206 kg, breaking the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games record. He lifted 93 kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk. Rebecca Graul of Canada won the bronze medal by lifting 178 kg.

Gyaneshwari broke the record twice in clean and jerk
The intensity of this competition can be easily estimated from the fact that records were broken many times. For example, in clean and jerk, Dnyaneshwari created a new sports record by lifting 107 kg, but Onome immediately broke this record by lifting 110 kg. Dnyaneshwari was also not ready to accept defeat, who again made the record by lifting 111 kg weight. However, this record remained in his name only for one minute and Onome again captured the record by lifting 113 kg weight.

Bindiarani won bronze with weight of 199 kg
Later, experienced Indian weightlifter Bindiyarani Devi gave a good challenge, but due to two failed attempts in clean and jerk, she had to settle for the bronze medal. Bindiarani lifted a total weight of 199 kg including 87 kg in snatch and 112 kg in clean and jerk.

World Championship silver medalist Rafiatu Folashade of Nigeria won the gold medal by setting a new Games record with a lift of 229 kg while Anne Sophie of Canada won the silver medal with a lift of 215 kg.
Sreeshankar and Satyanathan in long jump final
On the other hand, in the track and field competition, Indian long jump athlete M Sreeshankar crossed the qualifying level and made it to the finals, while Lokesh Satyanathan was also successful in progressing by finishing in the top 12. Sreeshankar qualified directly for the final in Group A by clearing a distance of 8.01 meters in his very first attempt.

Sreeshankar was the only athlete from his group to qualify directly. His season’s best performance is 8.38 metres. The qualifying level for the final was at least 12 players with a best performance of eight metres. Five other players from this group entered the finals by finishing in the top 12.
Lokesh Sathyanathan has qualified for the Men’s Long Jump Final at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after registering a best jump of 7.77m. He finished 4th in Group B and 7th overall across the qualifying rounds to secure his place in the final.

Sathyanathan, who was competing in Group B, cleared a distance of 7.77 meters in his very first attempt. He finished fourth in Group B behind Regan Corinne (7.84 m). Jamaica’s Tejay Gayle (8.10m) and Uroy Ryan (8.04m) made it straight to the finals from Group B. The final will be held on Wednesday (July 29).
Competing in the Men’s 100m Round 1, TOPS Development Athlete Gurindervir Singh clocked 10.39 seconds to finish 2nd in Heat 4 and 28th overall across the 11 heats.

Sprinter Gurinderveer Singh could not live up to expectations
However, Indian sprinter Gurindervir Singh failed to live up to the expectations and crashed out of the men’s 100m race after finishing 28th in the heats (preliminary round) with a disappointing timing of 10.39 seconds. Gurindervir actually couldn’t even come close to his best performance in the 100m race.

boxing : Sachin, Ankush and Sakshi in quarter finals
If we look at the boxing ring, former world youth champion Sachin Siwach, rising young boxers Ankush and Sakshi Chaudhary entered the quarter finals. 26-year-old Sachin defeated England’s William Hewitt 4-1 in the pre-quarterfinals. The Indian player maintained his patience against the English boxer and registered victory. Four out of five judges gave the decision in favor of the Indian boxer. With this victory, Sachin is just one win away from a medal in the Commonwealth Games. Now his next match will be against Botswana’s Treasure Moremi in the quarter-finals.
TOPS Development athlete Ankush advanced to the Men’s 80kg Quarter-finals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after defeating Zalaan Jan of Antigua & Barbuda by a 5–0 in the Round of 16.

Ankush defeated Yan Zelan of Antigua and Barbuda by unanimous decision 5-0 in a one-sided match in the pre-quarterfinals. This 20-year-old boxer from Haryana also needs just one more win to ensure a medal. Whereas former World Youth and Junior Champion Sakshi defeated Lethabo Modukanele of Botswana in 51 kg category by 5. Defeated by 0. Now she will play against Caitlin Fryers of Northern Ireland.

swimming : Sajan, Aryan and para swimmer Swatik Patel in the final
In swimming, two-time Olympian Sajan Prakash reached the final of the men’s 200m butterfly event of the Commonwealth Games by finishing sixth overall in all the heats (preliminary round). Sajan finished in heat number two with a timing of 1:58.59 seconds, behind Scotland’s Duncan Scott, who topped the race with a timing of 1:58.29 seconds. Aryan Nehra (men’s 800m freestyle) and para swimmer Swatik Patel (men’s 100m backstroke SB9) also made it to the finals.
