Sharmila Dhankhar created history in Commonwealth Games 2026, gave India its first gold medal in para athletics.

New Delhi: India’s para athlete Sharmila Dhankhar created history with her brilliant performance in the Commonwealth Games 2026. She gave India its first gold in para athletics in the Commonwealth Games by winning the gold medal in the women’s F57 shot put event. This victory in Glasgow has not only become a medal, but also an inspiring story of struggle, courage and hard work.

Won gold with the best performance of the season

40-year-old Sharmila Dhankhar made the best throw of 9.81 meters in the final match and won the gold medal. Ghana’s Jinabu Isah managed to win the silver medal with a throw of 8.65 metres, while Nigeria’s Eukaria Iyeji won the bronze medal with a throw of 8.19 metres. India’s Shilpa finished fourth and missed the medal by a narrow margin.

life full of struggles

Born in Chitrauli village of Haryana, Sharmila Dhankar was infected with polio at the age of two, due to which one of her legs was affected. Apart from facing physical challenges since childhood, he also had to go through many difficulties in his personal life.

After getting married at a young age, she faced domestic violence and dowry harassment. Ultimately she left her in-laws house with her two daughters and started life afresh.

Husband supported me at every step

A new turn came in Sharmila’s life when she got married for the second time to Ajit Singh. Ajit inspired him to make a career in para athletics. The family gave every possible support to fulfill his dream. The family even sold their house to meet the expenses of training and competitions in the year 2023, so that Sharmila can continue playing at the international level.

Started career at the age of 34

While most players start training from a young age, Sharmila entered competitive sports at the age of 34. Within a few years, he gained recognition at the national level and then consistently performed better in international competitions. Now the Commonwealth Games gold medal has become the biggest achievement of his career.

India’s medal count increased

With Sharmila’s historic victory, India’s stellar performance continues in the Commonwealth Games 2026. His gold medal boosted the morale of the Indian team and also increased the total number of medals.
