However, after a few hours the video was blocked for users in India and the message “Content is not available due to legal request” started appearing on the screen. Taking a tough stand on this incident, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) of the Government of India has sent summons to Meta’s Global President Joel Kaplan and Instagram head Adam Mosseri. After being surrounded from all sides, Meta has officially apologized to the government and termed it as a ‘technical glitch’ in its automated content filter.

The surprising thing is that at that time Meta’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) proved to be a complete failure in stopping the deepfake video of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and the false narratives being spread through foreign social media accounts. According to government sources, the Union Ministry is not at all satisfied with Meta’s explanation of ‘technical glitch’ as ​​the company could not explain how the fake message of ‘Legal Restrictions’ was generated on the screen without any court order or request from a legal agency.

Appearance before parliamentary committee on August 3: Crackdown on social media giants will be tightened

In view of this serious matter, the Standing Committee of Parliament on Communications and Information Technology has also taken strict action. The parliamentary committee has summoned senior representatives of Meta, X (Twitter), Snapchat and Google for the meeting to be held on August 3, 2026. In this meeting, citizens’ data privacy, online security and compliance with Indian laws will be reviewed. Meta, a company which earned advertising revenue of ₹ 29,392 crore in the financial year 2024-25 from India alone and has a base of more than 54 crore WhatsApp users, is being accused that instead of being an unbiased platform, it is turning into an agenda tool, which is a worrying sign for any democratic country.
