Kanpur. India's self-reliance in ammunition and artillery systems is getting a new impetus with the expansion of Adani Defense and Aerospace in Kanpur. The company has planned to expand employment opportunities along with increasing production capacity. The target is to increase the annual production of bullets at the Kanpur unit from 15 crore to 30 crore rounds, while the capacity to make 40 lakh grenades annually will be developed by 2027. At present 2 thousand people are getting employment through Kanpur unit. The expansion of the company in Hathipur will increase opportunities in logistics and other activities at the local level. Abhay rifle and Prahar light machine gun manufactured at Adani Defense and Aerospace are strengthening defense manufacturing.
A special tour was organized at Adani Defense and Aerospace's ammunition manufacturing facility in Kanpur. Its objective was to show India's strong self-reliance in the defense sector. In this regard, the company's CEO Ashish Rajvanshi informed about the expansion plans and increasing scope of defense manufacturing capacity.
The unit will be expanded in 250 acres
Expansion of the unit in about 250 acres is also proposed in Hathipur area. According to the company's CEO Ashish Rajvanshi, around Rs 2,000 crore will be invested in this proposed facility. The company has already invested about Rs 4,000 crore in Kanpur. Apart from this, it is planning to invest about Rs 4,000 crore more in the next few years. This will increase employment opportunities in Uttar Pradesh.
The company's investment activities in the field of defense manufacturing in Kanpur are going to become more extensive. This is expected to further strengthen the industrial and strategic role of Kanpur in the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor.
Employment to 2,000 people, expansion and opportunities
Currently, about 2,000 skilled and unskilled employees are working in this center of Adani Defense and Aerospace. New employment opportunities are expected to be created after the proposed expansion. According to the company, new jobs will not be limited to manufacturing units only, but it will also increase employment opportunities in logistics and other activities in the surrounding areas.
Production of bullets will reach 30 crore rounds annually
Every year, about 15 crore rounds of bullets of different grades are being produced in this Defense Ammunition Manufacturing Unit located in Kanpur. There is an effort to increase this manufacturing capacity to about Rs 30 crore by the end of the year. According to officials, this increase in production capacity is being done to meet India's ammunition needs and reduce dependence on imports.
Manufacturing of ammunition from small arms to tanks and artillery.
Various types of ammunition are being manufactured and assembled here. These include small-caliber ammunition used in rifles and other small arms, and large-caliber ammunition used in tanks and artillery systems. Apart from this, there are preparations to start production of medium-caliber ammunition. It is used in autocannon and other similar weapon systems. According to the company's CEO, production of medium-caliber ammunition is expected to begin by 2027.
Target to produce 40 lakh grenades annually by 2027
The company has also announced plans to increase grenade production capacity. Under this, it is expected to achieve the capacity of producing 40 lakh units of grenades annually by 2027. At the same time, additional capacity of 40 lakh units will be increased by 2029. This will reduce the country's dependence on imports and will increase self-reliance in the field of ammunition production.
Operation Vermillion showed the need for self-reliance
Adani Defense and Aerospace CEO Ashish Rajvanshi also stressed the importance of self-reliance in ammunition production. He said Operation Vermillion underlined the need for India to develop its own capabilities. He told that at that time the friendly countries were ready to help India, but they themselves were surrounded in a war situation. In such a situation, there was a possibility of delay in getting the help related to ammunition. This experience emphasized the need to strengthen India's own defense manufacturing capacity and 'Make in India'. We are moving rapidly towards completing this.
Now many types of bullets can be used in one weapon
Officials also displayed many important weapons in the Kanpur unit. During this, it was told that the Abhay rifle developed here is capable of firing both 5.56 mm and 9 mm bullets. This is a very special type of rifle in its segment. It was also told that Prahar light machine gun is being liked a lot by the army. The Indian Army has placed its biggest order for this rifle. From pistols to other advanced rifles and machine guns were also displayed here.
Bullets are being tested using AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also being used in the production process in defense manufacturing facilities. According to officials, ammunition cases are inspected on the basis of prescribed standards through AI based case-line inspection technology. This automates the tablet inspection process and helps ensure production quality with greater accuracy.
Production in accordance with NATO standards
According to officials, the ammunition and artillery systems manufactured here are in accordance with NATO standards. This helps ensure interoperability between related weapon systems, ensuring consistent performance. It was also told that the demand for ammunition of Adani Defense and Aerospace is now coming from friendly countries also.
