Health Desk. Heart attack is a serious medical emergency in which the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle is suddenly reduced or stopped. In many cases its symptoms are sudden and severe, but in some people the body may give warning signals in advance. It is important to recognize these signs in time, because early help can reduce the risk of serious harm.
1. Chest pressure or tightness
Pressure, heaviness, tightness, burning or pain in the middle or left side of the chest can be a major warning sign of a heart attack. Some people feel as if a heavy weight is placed on the chest. This problem may last for a few minutes or may come back intermittently.
2. Trouble breathing
Shortness of breath without much effort or sudden difficulty breathing during normal activity can also be a serious sign. This symptom may appear with or without chest pain. Such a situation should not be ignored merely by considering it as fatigue.
3. Pain in arm, shoulder, back or jaw
The pain of heart attack is not always limited to the chest only. Pain or discomfort may spread to one or both arms, shoulders, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen. Especially if it is accompanied by chest pressure or shortness of breath, it is important to seek medical help immediately.
4. Sudden sweating and weakness
Sudden cold sweat without heat or exercise, feeling weak or unusual restlessness in the body can also be warning signs. Some people may feel dizzy or faint before a heart attack.
5. Nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue
In some cases, complaints like nausea, vomiting, dizziness or unusual fatigue may occur before a heart attack. Symptoms may sometimes be different or less pronounced than usual in women, the elderly, and people with diabetes. Therefore, such new or sudden onset symptoms should be taken seriously.
What to do if symptoms appear?
If chest pressure or pain is accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or pain in other parts of the body, do not wait for it to get better on its own. Get emergency medical help immediately.
