Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Media In-charge Baltej Pannu on Thursday condemned the reported attempt to attack Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, saying there could be no place for violence at a religious institution.
Pannu said the sanctity of Gurdwara Sahibs must be respected and described the reported incident as strongly condemnable.
“The attack attempt should be condemned in the strongest terms. There is no place for such violence at a religious institution, and the sanctity of Gurdwara Sahibs must be respected,” he said.
At the same time, Pannu said the SAD also needed to acknowledge the sentiments that continue to prevail within the Sikh community over the incidents of desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in 2015.
He alleged that the Akali Dal had formed governments five times by seeking support in the name of the Panth, but incidents of desecration were reported at several places during its tenure in 2015.
Referring to the protests that followed, Pannu said peaceful demonstrators faced the use of water cannons and firing, resulting in the deaths of two Sikhs.
“The pain and resentment over those incidents continue to remain alive in the minds of Sikhs even today. This sentiment needs to be understood,” he said.
Pannu maintained that any attempt to attack an individual must be condemned, while asserting that the SAD should also recognize the grievances arising from the events of 2015.
He reiterated that religious places must remain free from violence and called for the sanctity and dignity of Gurdwara Sahibs to be upheld.
