According to a report from 'Variety', Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach, Margo Robbie and Ryan Gosling could be reuniting for a potential sequel. The first 'Barbie' grossed approximately $1.4 billion globally, making it the most successful film made by a female director. The report states that Warner Bros. has made more than six offers to the team in the last three years, but each time the talks did not progress. The studio's latest offer is believed to be its biggest yet, with the team wanting a higher upfront fee and a bigger share of the earnings.
Ryan Gosling's fee demand
A source close to the deal described the new package as a huge amount, but other sources said that the total package and the individual amounts received by the artists cannot be considered the same. For this reason the talks are still going on. According to reports, Ryan Gosling is demanding $20 million to return as 'Kane'. Meanwhile, Gerwig and Baumbach have a story idea for a new film, but don't want to share it until a deal is finalized.
Time crunch for Warner Bros.
For Warner Bros., the issue is not limited to fees alone. According to the report, making a sequel was not mandatory in the contract of the first film. Therefore the studio is having to bring the entire team together on new terms. Additionally, timing is also of the essence due to the agreement with Mattel. If a new 'Barbie' film does not begin production by the end of 2026, the film rights to the doll could go back to Mattel. In this situation, the studio faces the challenge of completing the deal in limited time.
