The trend of electric vehicles (EV) is increasing very rapidly in India. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Heavy Industries gave information about the progress of government schemes being implemented to promote electric vehicles in the country. According to the data released by the ministry, so far 67,657 electric vehicle chargers have been installed in different states and union territories across the country. According to government data, a total of 67,657 EV chargers have been installed across the country by August 7, 2026. The special thing is that this large number also includes 1,139 battery swapping station chargers. The battery swapping facility means that once the battery is exhausted, there will be no need to wait long for charging, but a charged battery can be taken directly from there.

The government is continuously encouraging people to buy electric vehicles and in this context the tax burden has also been reduced. According to the ministry, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) applicable on electric vehicles and their chargers or charging stations is now only 5 percent.
Apart from this, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also taken a big step. The ministry has announced to provide green number plates (green license plates) for these battery operated vehicles. Another big relief from this decision is that these battery vehicles will be completely exempted from licensing requirements. Lakhs of vehicles sold under FAME scheme
According to the data shared by the ministry, there has been a huge increase in the sales of electric vehicles under the FAME India scheme. A total of 2.80 lakh electric vehicles got support under the FAME-1 scheme. At the same time, under the FAME India Phase-2 scheme, 16.72 lakh electric vehicles have been sold till June 30, 2026. These vehicles include electric two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler.
The second phase of FAME India Scheme was implemented for five years from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2024. A total budget of Rs 11,500 crore was kept for this entire scheme. Through this scheme, the demand for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers was given a special boost. Along with this, government subsidy was also given for setting up e-buses and public EV charging stations (EV PCS) across the country.

Apart from private vehicles, the number of electric buses in public transport is also increasing continuously. According to a press release issued by the ministry, till July 31, 2026, 5,299 electric buses have been operated under the FAME scheme. At the same time, till July 10, 2026, 27,555 electric buses have been covered under the PM-e-Bus Seva-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) scheme.
The ministry has also given figures of some other government schemes. The sale of 26.59 lakh electric vehicles has received support under the PM e-Drive scheme. At the same time, under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Auto and Auto Components, about 21.30 lakh electric vehicles have been sold till March 31, 2026. It is clear from all these figures that the penetration of electric vehicles in the country is increasing very rapidly through government schemes.
