The state government has taken many important and historic decisions for the farmers of Bihar. The government has taken three major and relief steps with the aim of reducing the risks associated with farming, expanding the scope of banking facilities in rural areas and strengthening the grain storage infrastructure.
These main announcements include re-implementation of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana in the state, providing micro-ATM facilities to villages through cooperative societies and construction of large grain warehouses in local committees.
Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme will be implemented from Rabi season
The state government has approved the formal implementation of 'Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana' across Bihar from the Rabi season of the financial year 2026-27. The primary objective of this ambitious scheme is to provide economic security and support to farmers in case of crop loss due to flood, drought or other natural disasters.
Under this system, farmers will be provided appropriate compensation as per their agricultural costs. The most reassuring thing is that farmers will have to pay a very nominal premium from their own pocket. The burden of most of the premium amount will be borne by the central and state governments together. The final premium amount to be taken from farmers will be finalized in the upcoming cabinet meeting.
Money will be available in villages only, micro-ATM will increase banking facilities
The government is also working rapidly towards making access to banking services very easy in rural areas. Under the 'Sahakar' programme, 186 milk cooperative societies, 618 PACS, 19 primary vegetable producer cooperative societies and 7 other cooperative institutions of the state will be trained and developed as 'Bank Mitra'.
Micro-ATM facility will be provided at all these local institutions. With this, villagers and farmers will not have to visit distant bank branches for small financial transactions or cash withdrawal. Apart from this, the work of opening new bank accounts of all cooperative societies and their members will also be completed expeditiously by running a special campaign.
Huge grain warehouses will be built in 36 committees
The third biggest initiative to make farmers and cooperative societies self-reliant is related to food grain storage. Under the 'Food Storage Scheme' in the state, modern warehouses of different capacities are being constructed in 36 committees of different districts.
The storage capacity of these warehouses will be 1000 tonnes, 2000 tonnes and 2500 tonnes. This initiative will significantly increase the capacity to store grains safely and moisture-free at the local level, providing farmers with a better infrastructure to safely store their produce instead of selling it at low prices.
