Karnataka set an example of greenery, made a mountain of garbage green

22 acres of land was converted into urban land by disposing of 62,252 metric tons of garbage.

New Delhi. Yakalaspura garbage mountain spread over 35 acres in Raichur city of Karnataka has been scientifically cleaned and converted into a green area. In the process, 62,252 metric tonnes of waste was disposed of and approximately 22 acres of valuable urban land was reclaimed.

The Union Urban Development Ministry said that Miyawaki Forest is now being developed on this land. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated this site on World Environment Day on June 5, 2026. Plantation started from the same day and till now 60,000 saplings have been planted. These include bamboo and other local species, which will help improve the soil, absorb carbon, increase biodiversity and purify the air. In the next one year this area will be completely covered with greenery.

Raichur City Corporation took this project forward with the vision of ‘Toxic Waste to Ecological Wealth’ i.e. creating environmental wealth from toxic waste. Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) and New India Space Limited helped the local bodies in this work.

Earlier this dumpsite was a big problem for the people nearby. The garbage smelled, dirty water seeped out and caused pollution. Now the same place has become a model for the city on how the old dumpsite can be cleaned and converted into a green area.
