Mumbai: The ongoing dispute in the Bombay High Court between Sonu Nigam and his namesake Sonu Nigam Singh regarding the use of his name on social media has been settled after an agreement. Singer Sonu Nigam had approached the court demanding protection of his personality and publicity rights. His allegation was that Sonu Nigam Singh is using things similar to his name and identity on social media, which may create confusion among the people.
According to singer Sonu Nigam, his namesake Sonu Nigam Singh had kept the display name of his account on social media platform X only as 'Sonu Nigam', while the username was 'Sonu Nigam Singh'. Singer claimed that due to this, many people may misunderstand that this account is his. According to court records, there were thousands of followers on the concerned account and singer Sonu Nigam's picture was also used on it.
In this case, on July 11, 2025, Justice R.I. Chagla had issued an interim order. The court had said that the name Sonu Nigam has been specifically linked to the identity of the singer. The court had banned Sonu Nigam Singh from using Sonu Nigam only as a display name or account name on social media. However, the court had also clarified that Sonu Nigam Singh can use his full name, provided it does not create any kind of confusion or misidentification among the people.
Now an agreement has been reached between both the parties. The Bombay High Court settled the case by taking on record the terms of the agreement. The promises given by both the parties before the court were also accepted as the terms of the agreement. This matter is considered important from the point of view of protection of personality rights, publicity rights and digital identity of the celebrity. That is, the digital battle of 'Sonu Nigam Vs Sonu Nigam', which started between two people with the same name, has now ended with a settlement in the Bombay High Court.
