Updated WTC points table after India’s 165-run win over Sri Lanka in 1st Test

India won the first Test in Galle by 165 runs against Sri Lanka to record their fifth win in the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Shubman Gill had revealed his intent to win the series and also notch up more victories in a bid to play the WTC final in 2027.

The win on Wednesday in Galle didn’t improve India’s rank in the standings but took their win percentage to 53. Sri Lanka have seen their percentage drop to 33 after the loss but have managed to hold on to their sixth place.

Both sides will play each other in the second game of the series starting August 23 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Interestingly, both India and Sri Lanka will be playing New Zealand next in key bilateral assignments, and the two teams would want to win the series and keep themselves in the hunt for a WTC final spot.

Australia lead the table despite loss to Bangladesh

2023 WTC winners Australia, led by Pat Cummins, are still top of the points table despite their loss to Bangladesh by nine wickets in Darwin last week. The Aussies will play the second Test of the series in Mackay, which is slated to start on August 22. After that, they will go to South Africa for a three-match Test tour.

Current champions South Africa are second in the table, while former winners New Zealand are placed third, with Bangladesh in the 4th spot with a win percentage of 66. England and Pakistan, who will begin the three-match series on Wednesday, are placed seventh and eighth, followed by West Indies at the bottom.
