PERTH, AUSTRALIA – AUGUST 05: Aleksandar Stankovic of FC Internazionale turns with the ball during the pre-season match between AC Milan and FC Internazionale at Optus Stadium on August 05, 2026 in Perth, Australia.
Stankovic wants to fight for his spot at Inter
Stankovic, the son of former Inter treble winner Dejan Stankovic, came through the Nerazzurri academy system before being sold to Club Brugge last summer. The youngster impressed with his performances in Belgium and convinced Inter to activate their buy-back optionwhich cost the Nerazzurri a reported €23m.
Despite being one of the most promising midfielders in Europe last season, it has been unclear what role the 21-year-old will have at San Siro this coming season given the various different options that are available to Chivu in central midfield.
Italy regular Nicolo Barella and Turkey captain Hakan Calhanoglu are still expected to be starters in midfield, as is Curtis Jones, who is set to join the Nerazzurri in a €35m deal from Liverpool.
Inter also have solid options in Petar Sucic and Piotr Zielinski, not forgetting experienced veteran Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who signed a contract extension earlier this summer, nor the versatile Andy Diouf, who has been tested at right wing-back during pre-season.

There have been suggestions that Inter could look to sell Stankovic on for an immediate profit this summer, or at least to send him out on loan so that he has consistent playing time in 2026-27.
