mystery of a unique place
There are many amazing places in the world, knowing about which everyone is amazed. One such place is located in Turkmenistan in Central Asia. The Karakum Desert here, which is called the door to hell, is a mysterious place. This place is near Devrej village and is also known as 'Shining Karakum'.
Why the door to hell?
It was named 'Door of Hell' because a part of it always burns in flames. If you want to know why it is called so, then in this article we will tell you the story behind it.
1971 incident
In the year 1971, an important event occurred in the Karakum Desert. At that time a team of geologists from the Soviet Union had come in search of oil reserves. They found a place where they thought there might be oil reserves. He began drilling on a large deposit of natural gas, but he had no idea of its consequences.
gas coming out of pit
During the excavation, the ground started sinking due to the heavy machines, forming many pits. One of these craters was the largest, measuring approximately 230 feet wide and 65 feet deep. Scientists started getting worried because natural gas was continuously coming out from this pit. Although this gas was not poisonous, it replaced oxygen, making breathing difficult.
burning of fire
You will be surprised to know that this fire is still burning even today. Turkmenistan scientists hope that the fire will extinguish itself when the natural gas present in the pit runs out. But this has not happened till now. In 2010, Turkmenistan's President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov visited the pit and expressed concern over the fire as it could threaten nearby gas fields.
