New Delhi: The demonstration of youth against caste based reservation in New Delhi remains in the news. Let us tell you that on Friday a large number of protesters had reached Jantar Mantar, where they raised loud slogans demanding change in the reservation system. However, late in the evening the security forces removed the protesters from there. Now many protesters reached Rajghat in the early hours of Saturday, where the police have taken some people into custody.
Protestors raised questions
The protesters allege that they were raising their demands peacefully, but strict action was taken against them. They say that they were removed from Jantar Mantar and force was also used on some people. Not only this, the protesters are raising the question that when they were not committing any kind of violence then why was there a need to stop their movement.
Let us tell you, a protester Pankaj claimed that the police lathicharged the people during the movement. Abhishek Thakur said that their protest was ended shortly after it started, while other groups were allowed to protest for a longer period. Sunny Dwivedi alleged that the protesters were threatened with detention and their stage was also removed.
What is the demand of the protesters
The protesters say that economic status instead of caste should be made the main basis in determining eligibility for government assistance and reservation. He argues that an economically weaker person should get education, coaching and other government assistance irrespective of his caste. Some protesters are also demanding a review of the existing reservation system and changes in the provisions of the creamy layer.
Protest was not allowed at Jantar Mantar
The ‘Remove Reservation Movement’ associated with this campaign had appealed to people through social media to join the protest. According to the police, no protest, procession or meeting was allowed at Jantar Mantar. However, according to the Central District Police, NOC was issued for the peaceful protest at Ramlila Maidan, where gathering of up to 500 people was allowed. Now, in view of the protest, security has been increased in Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas. Police have deployed barricades and additional forces to maintain law and order.
