SIM Card Rule: Important news for SIM card buyers; The rules will change from today, now only 'so many' numbers in one person's name

DoT has issued a circular directing all telecom companies to identify customers who have mobile connections in their name above the pre-determined limit. Such customers will be clearly informed that they cannot now purchase any mobile connection in their name. This decision has been taken to prevent fake SIM cards and fraud. Maximum 9 mobile connections

As per the rules, a person can have a maximum of 9 mobile connections in India in one name across different Telecom companies and service sectors. But in certain areas this limit has been kept even lower. Citizens residing in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and North Eastern states can purchase maximum 6 mobile connections in their name. Also, while filling the Customer Application Form i.e. CAF, customers will have to inform about the existing mobile connections in their name.

What is the new rule?

According to the directives issued by DOT, from August 24, telecom companies will have to identify customers who have already purchased mobile connections up to the limit and who are trying to get a new SIM card. If the customer already has mobile connections up to the limit, the telecom companies cannot issue new mobile numbers to such customers. Also, information about the total number of mobile connections purchased in the name of the customers will also be given to them.

Digital Intelligence Platform

Telecom companies will have to take help of the government's digital intelligence platform to implement these new rules. Subscriber data related to different telecom companies will be available on this platform. This will make it easier to get information about the number of mobile connections of different telecom companies in the name of any person.

Representative photographs of customers appearing on DIP

Another important change will be made in the new system. According to the report, from August 23, representative photographs of customers who already have mobile connections up to applicable limits will be made available on DIP. It will be used by telecom companies to verify the identity of the applicant for a new connection and their connection status.
