What big change did the government make regarding expensive sugar and hoarding, will sugar become cheaper now

Amidst the rising prices of sugar, the Central Government has made important changes in the import rules. The government has implemented converting raw sugar imported under Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) into white or refined sugar and selling it in the domestic market within two months of import. This step of the government has been taken with the aim of increasing the availability of sugar in the market, curbing hoarding and controlling prices before the festive season. However, it cannot be said yet whether this will reduce the prices of sugar.

Earlier, it was necessary to process the imported raw sugar within a reasonable time frame in such a way that it could be sold in the domestic market by 31 October 2026. Now the government has clearly set a deadline of two months for processing and sale. According to government data, the average retail price of sugar in the country reached Rs 63.05 per kg on Monday. About a month ago the same price was Rs 48.73 per kg.
