Automobile Desk – Tesla Cybercab Robotaxi: Electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla is all set to officially launch its ambitious driverless car 'Cybercab'. The company will present its revolutionary robotaxi during a special event organized in Austin city of Texas on September 3, 2026. The most unique feature of this car is that it has neither a steering wheel nor a brake or accelerator pedal. The entire control of the vehicle will be completely dependent on Tesla's advanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Artificial Intelligence system.
Selected guests will get the first ride
This event to be held in Texas will not be public on a large scale but will be an exclusive event. It mainly invites customers and fans who tested or used Tesla's Robotaxi services in mid-August. During the event, guests will get a chance to sit inside this futuristic car and experience its autonomous driving features in real-world conditions.

Unique two-seater design and AI4 technology
Usually passenger cars have four to five seats, but Cybercab has been specially designed with a compact and futuristic cabin with two seats. There will be no control board inside the car in place of the driver, giving passengers a completely new and open cabin experience. Tesla's AI4 computing platform is being used in these cars initially manufactured at the Austin plant, while the company is working on introducing even more capable AI5 hardware in the future.
The journey from prototype of 2024 to commercial test of 2026
Tesla first showed the Cybercab prototype to the world on a closed track in California in October 2024. Since then, the company is continuously working on improving its autonomous technology. Currently, Tesla's modified 'Model Y' cars are running as robotaxi in limited areas of cities like Austin, Dallas, Miami and Houston. At the same time, in-house testing of this last model of Cybercab had been started by the company employees from July 2026, which is considered to be the final step towards its commercial rollout.
Safety and regulatory rules become the biggest challenge
Launching a car without steering and pedals in the market is more of a legal and safety challenge for Tesla than a technical one. In case of any technical fault or emergency in conventional vehicles, a human can handle the vehicle, but this option will not be available in Cybercab. Automotive safety regulators are keeping a close eye on how the car performs in dense traffic and unpredictable weather without any human backup. This is the reason why it is likely to be introduced in a phased manner on limited routes instead of opening it completely to the general public immediately after the launch.
