IND vs SL 2nd Test: Sri Lanka’s young batsman Sonal Dinusha has created a new history in the cricket world with his brilliant performance during the second test match between India and Sri Lanka at Colombo. Even before stepping out to bat in the second innings of the Colombo Test, Dinusha has already registered her name among the greats of world cricket. By scoring his second consecutive century in this two-match Test series against India, he has created a historic record that the world’s greatest batsmen aspire to achieve.
Sonal Dinusha has presented an aggressive batting pattern in his debut Test series against India. After impressive innings of 100 and 84 in the first Test of the series at Galle, Dinusha also contributed a brilliant 103 in the first innings of the Colombo Test. With this century, Dinusha became only the eighth batsman in the world to score two consecutive centuries in the first two Test matches of his career against India. Earlier in 2009, New Zealand’s explosive batsman Jesse Ryder achieved this feat. Dinusha has inscribed her name in golden letters in the pages of history by equaling this rider’s record after exactly 15 years.
Dinusha’s entry into the historic club that dates back to 1948
This historic feat of scoring two centuries in the first two Test matches against India was first achieved in 1948 by the great West Indies batsman Sir Everton Weeks. Then in 1958, legendary all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers of West Indies repeated this feat. As for batsmen from the Asian subcontinent, Pakistan’s Zaheer Abbas (1978) and former Sri Lankan captain Duleep Mendis (1982) also scored centuries against India in their opening two Tests.
Even after decades, this influence of the giants remained intact
In the 1990s, England’s Robin Smith (1990) and South Africa’s former veteran opener and former Indian team coach Gary Kirsten (1996) also achieved double centuries in the first two Tests against India. The only player to join the club in the 21st century was Jesse Ryder (2009). Now in this test series which is being played in August 2026, Sonal Dinusha has got a place as the eighth player in this list after 15 years due to his talent.
