To curb rising onion prices, the central government will sell buffer stock of onion in Delhi at a concessional rate of Rs 35 per kg from Thursday. In many cities of the country, the retail price of onion has reached Rs 55 to Rs 60 per kg. Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi will start the sale of onion at subsidized rates in Delhi on Thursday.

A senior official of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs gave this information on Wednesday. The government has prepared a 'buffer stock' of 1.21 lakh tonnes of onion for 2026. Onions will be launched in the market from this store. This retail sale will be conducted by three agencies, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), National Cooperative Consumer Federation of India (NCCF) and Kendriya Bhandar.

NCCF Managing Director Anees Joseph Chandra said, “We will start the sale in Delhi tomorrow and by the weekend it will be started in the NCR region also.” NCCF has a buffer stock of about 62,000 tonnes of onion. Out of this, 400 tonnes of onion is being sent to Delhi via rail from Nashik in Maharashtra. For this, a special train named 'Kanda Express' is expected to reach Delhi on Thursday.
NCCF Delhi will sell onions at 100 stores of Kendriya Bhandar
NCCF will sell onions through 100 Kendriya Bhandar stores in Delhi. Apart from this, talks are also going on to sell onions through about 300 sales centers of Mother Dairy. Initially NCCF will also sell onions through 15 mobile vans. Their number will be increased to 40 from Friday. Chandra said that the onion consignment coming through rail will also be used for sale in Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Varanasi and other cities.
NAFED has a buffer stock of less than 55,000 tonnes of onion. Apart from Delhi, he will also sell onions at concessional rates at other centers including Kochi and Guwahati. The first special train has left from Nashik for Delhi carrying 800 tonnes of onions.
