Actor Chunky Pandey has recalled filmmaker David Dhawan's infectious enthusiasm on film sets, revealing that the director would sometimes become so involved in a scene that crew members had to stop him from entering the camera frame.
Chunky shared the anecdote while speaking about his experience of working with Dhawan on an upcoming episode of Sony Entertainment Television's India's Best Dancer Season 5. He also described Dhawan as one of the finest directors he has worked with.
Recalling the era when film sets did not have monitors and the technology available today, Chunky said Dhawan would become deeply immersed in the action once the camera started rolling.
“One thing I want to tell you is that when you shoot, in our time there was no monitor and all this technology. So the director 'Start, sound, camera, action!' In action, people had to watch David because he almost came into the frame and the jab shots started, because he himself got excited with the scene,” he said.
Chunky added, “I think he is one of the best directors I have ever worked with. Aur woh khud pehle editor the na, toh unki editing shooting ke wakt hi ho jaati thi.”
Actress Karisma Kapoor, who also spoke about Dhawan on the show, said the filmmaker would mentally visualize an entire scene and instinctively understand how the comedy should be edited.
“Unke dimaag mein tha unka scene, and comedy hoti hai toh he is editing, that's why he is so good in comedy also,” she said.
Dhawan and Chunky have worked together on films including eyes (1993), which also starred Govinda, and Rascals (2011). Their professional association continues with Dhawan's latest directorial, I am young so there is love.
Dhawan's collaborations with Govinda and Karisma Kapoor also resulted in several popular comedies of the 1990s, including Raja Babu, Coolie No. 1, Saajan Chale In-laws, Hero no. 1 and Haseena Maan Jaayegi.
I am young so there is lovestarring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, was earlier described by David Dhawan as his final directorial venture.
