Pig Kidneys In Human Bodies: Could This Breakthrough Finally End The Long Wait For Kidney Transplants?

A genetically engineered pig kidney has maintained the freedom of a 66-year-old man from dialysis for an unprecedented 271 days, according to doctors, which represents a giant leap in the field of xenotransplantation, the transplantation of animal organs to human beings. The man, Tim Andrews of Concord, New Hampshire, who had suffered from kidney failure associated with type 2 diabetes, got his kidney from a genetically engineered pig at Massachusetts General Hospital in January 2025 after two years of hemodialysis treatment. In January 2026, when the pig kidney started showing signs of damage, he successfully got his kidney transplanted from a dead human donor.

How Was the Organ Made Compatible?

The kidney was sourced from a genetically engineered pig, which had 69 modifications to its genome to make it easier for the body to accept it and minimize rejection. As stated in the report that was published in The Lancet, the experimenters from Mass General Brigham found out that the kidney started functioning right away after transplantation. An early episode of rejection was treated and resolved, and no transmission of pig-related pathogens was detected throughout the nine months the kidney remained in place.

Why This Matters For The Organ Shortage Crisis?

Lead author Dr Leonardo Riella described the global organ shortage as the biggest crisis currently facing the field of transplantation. The organ in question was obtained from a transgenic pig which had been modified at 69 spots on its DNA in order to make it more easily accepted by the body, thereby reducing any possibility of rejection. According to the report carried by The Lancet, the scientists from Mass General Brigham were surprised to discover that the kidney began functioning immediately after transplantation.

Still Early Days, But A Promising Direction

This is not the first attempt at pig kidney transplantation in a living person. An earlier case in 2024 saw a patient survive just 52 days before dying of unrelated heart complications. Andrews’ case marks the longest survival on record for this kind of procedure and offers stronger evidence that xenotransplantation could one day move beyond being just a temporary bridge. Researchers, however, caution that more studies are still needed before pig kidneys can be considered a long-term, standalone solution to the organ shortage.
