Mensah Shines in Miami Debut
STANFORD, Calif. — Darian Mensah delivered a record-setting performance in his first game for Miami, throwing five touchdown passes as the seventh-ranked Hurricanes opened their season with a 45-6 victory over Stanford.
Mensah completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards, establishing Miami records for the most passing yards and touchdown passes by a quarterback making his debut with the program.
“I was just eager to get on the field,” said Mensah, who transferred this offseason from Duke. “It’s been a long offseason. It took a lot to get to where I’m at today so I was just was ready to go.”
Miami improved to 1-0 overall and in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Stanford fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Toney Breaks Miami Receiving Record
Malachi Toney finished with 234 receiving yards and three touchdowns, setting a Miami single-game record.
Eddie Brown had held the previous mark with 220 yards against Boston College in 1984, during the game remembered for Doug Flutie’s last-second “Hail Flutie” touchdown pass.
Mensah and Toney connected for their third score on a 47-yard touchdown in the third quarter, the play that carried Toney beyond Brown’s record.
“It means a lot knowing how many greats played at this university,” Toney said. “For me to be the player to break that record and set a new one, it just means a whole lot.”
Toney’s 234 yards and Mensah’s 401 passing yards were confirmed in the final game statistics.
Miami Strikes Immediately
Mensah demonstrated his impact on his first snap for the Hurricanes, completing a 48-yard pass to Toney that immediately put Stanford’s defense under pressure.
He completed the opening drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Toney. The pair connected again for a 2-yard score on Miami’s next possession.
Toney celebrated both touchdowns by striking a Heisman Trophy pose in front of Miami supporters.
“You couldn’t draw it up any better,” Mensah said. “If you got one on one, if you’re leaving No. 1 one on one, that’s a problem. So just seeing that pre-snap just made it that much easier for me. … You want to go out and punch a team in the mouth.”
Hurricanes Display Offensive Depth
Mensah spread his other touchdown passes among Miami’s receivers.
He found Daylyn Upshaw for a score during the second quarter before connecting with Cooper Barkate on a 34-yard touchdown in the third. His final scoring throw was the 47-yard strike to Toney.
The Hurricanes reached the end zone on six of their first seven drives, validating preseason expectations that they would possess one of the country’s strongest offenses.
Mensah entered the season after leading all Power Four conference quarterbacks with 3,973 passing yards while playing for Duke in 2025.
He is now paired with Toney, who recorded 109 receptions for 1,211 yards as a freshman and helped Miami advance to the College Football Playoff championship game.
Stanford Unable to Finish Drives
Stanford quarterback Davis Warren passed for 214 yards but could not lead the Cardinal into the end zone.
Stanford had defeated Hawaii 37-27 in Warren’s debut with the program the previous week. Against Miami, the Cardinal moved the ball at times but repeatedly stalled near the scoring area.
“There were spots tonight where we move the football,” Stanford coach Tavita Pritchard said. “We got down in the red zone a couple of times. We got to finish. I think that’s what that spoke to. We got to find consistency and we got to finish in the end zone.”
Stanford’s six points came on two field goals.

Stanford: The Cardinal could not maintain the momentum from their opening victory over Hawaii when confronted with a nationally ranked opponent. Stanford has not opened a season with two consecutive victories since 2018.
