Filmmaker R. Sarath: Big news is coming from Malayalam cinema world. Renowned Malayalam film producer, screenwriter and cultural administrator R. Sarath died at KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram around 1 am on Monday. He was 64 years old. The demise of R Sarath was a great loss to the art world of Kerala.

Filmmaker Sarath entered the film industry in 2000 with the film 'Sayahanam'. He won nine international awards, one National Award and four Kerala State Film Awards.
Producer Sarath's debut film, which he scripted and directed himself, won the Kerala State Film Award and the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Director's Debut Film.
It was also screened in the Competition Section of the 2001 Munich International Film Festival and subsequently screened at several international festivals.
Her subsequent films include Status (2003), Shilavati (2006), The Desire – A Journey of a Woman (2011), an India-China co-production, and Parudisa (2012 – Paradise), which received honors at international film festivals in Mexico and Amsterdam.

Buddhanum Chaplinum Chirikkunnu (Buddha and Chaplin are laughing – 2016) explores the legacy of Charlie Chaplin through the character of Indraguptan, played by Malayalam actor Indrans, during the centenary celebrations of Chaplin's acting career.
Her last film was 'Swayam: Selfless', which released in 2017 and centered on a mother and her autistic child.
Sarath's documentary film 'The Painted Epics' focusing on Kerala's mural painting tradition and Raja Ravi Varma was critically acclaimed. This documentary is based on the traditional Mural Paintings of Kerala and the life and works of the great Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma.
While making it, he discovered rare frescoes painted by Raja Ravi Varma in the Kilimanoor Temple.
For his research work he received a Junior Fellowship from the Union Ministry of Culture in 1996.

Sarath, who has a postgraduate degree in English Literature and formal training in film production and journalism, has also served as Deputy Director in the Department of Information and Public Relations, Director of MPCC and Secretary of Bharat Bhavan under the Department of Culture.
Chief Minister V.D. Chief Minister VD Satheesan and Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan condoled his demise, calling it a big loss for the film and cultural world of Kerala.
Satheesan described Sarath as a notable director of Malayalam cinema, whose diverse works have left a mark in the film and cultural fields.
Vijayan recalled Sarath's contribution to the cinema world as well as the cultural and administrative fields of Kerala.
