How much is the tariff imposed?
The US Department of Commerce has imposed an anti-dumping duty of 123.04% on Indian solar manufacturers. In addition, a countervailing duty of 126.09% has also been levied on Indian companies. The anti-dumping duty for Indonesian producers is 94.36%, while for Laos producers it is 65.43%. Talking about countervailing duties, Indonesia has been charged from 73.2% to 173.7% and Laos from 82.03% to 153.67%.
Inquiry into complaint of American companies
The trade investigation was initiated based on a complaint filed by the Alliance for American Solar Manufacturing and Trade.
The alliance includes leading US solar companies First Solar, Hanwha Qcells and Mission Solar Energy.
The purpose of the alliance was to ensure fair competition for American solar manufacturers.
According to the organization, these final decisions are important steps toward enforcing US trade laws and protecting the domestic solar industry and its workers.
A big decision will be taken on October 14
The United States International Trade Commission (USITC) will now give its final decision on the matter on October 14. The commission will determine whether US domestic manufacturers have suffered actual or future injury from solar products imported from India, Indonesia and Laos. If the commission confirms that the imports have caused injury, the US Commerce Department could issue a final tariff order in November.
The solar energy trade dispute has been going on for years
The solar energy trade dispute between the US and China is a long-running dispute. The US first imposed anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on Chinese solar products in 2012. After this, many Chinese companies started shifting their production from China to other Asian countries. The decision to impose heavy tariffs on solar imports from India, Indonesia and Laos could increase pressure on solar manufacturers from these countries to do business in the US market.
