NPCI AI UPI Payment Hold: Imagine you ask an AI assistant to pay your monthly mobile recharge, electricity bill or grocery bill and it directly deducts the money from your UPI account. Serious work was going on to develop such a facility in the field of digital payments. However, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has put the proposed scheme on hold for now to ensure security of customer funds before implementing this facility.
What is UPI’s new AI agent system?
NPCI is working on a technological framework that will allow AI agents to make small and regular payments on behalf of users. Currently in UPI system customers have to make every payment manually. Under the new system, users will be able to assign limits and rights to the AI agent in advance, allowing the AI to automatically pay bills or recharges on time every month. This feature was being associated with the UAP protocol.
Why did NPCI put a brake on automatic payments?
The main and primary reason for banning this system is the security concern. Like normal software, AI not only follows instructions but also has the ability to make decisions at its own level. It is not yet clear who will be responsible for the financial losses incurred if the AI agent makes a wrong decision, transfers money to the wrong account or suffers a cyber attack. Therefore, NPCI first wants to establish a robust identification and monitoring registry.
Risk of ‘rogue AI’ and technical glitches
With the increasing use of AI, ‘rogue AI’ or incorrectly programmed or virus-infected AI can become a major threat. For example, if you have allowed AI to pay up to ₹1,000 monthly, but due to a system glitch or hacking it transacts ₹10,000 instead of ₹1,000, the customer could suffer a huge loss. In such a case, it must be decided who will be held responsible, whether it is the bank, the AI developer or the payment app.
The next decision will be taken only after determining the responsibility
This service will not be launched until a clear legal and technical policy is in place to determine liability for errors, cyber fraud and financial losses caused by AI agents. NPCI is building a tight network to operate AI agents securely and monitor their every move, so that customers’ money is completely safe in the future.
