How to take care of brass utensils
Brass utensils and decorative items have been used in Indian homes for centuries. Puja bell, lamp, plate, bowl or other special utensils, the golden shine of brass gives them a distinct identity. But over time, due to exposure to air and moisture, their shine reduces and a black or brown layer starts accumulating on the surface.
In this situation there is no need for expensive polishing every time. The dirt and tarnish accumulated on the surface of brass can be easily cleaned with some common items present in the house.
Reason for black layer on brass
Brass is a mixture of copper and zinc. When it comes in contact with air, moisture, and other elements, a layer forms on its top surface due to a chemical reaction. This is called tarnishing. This is a normal process, but with regular cleaning and care its shine can be maintained for a long time.
cleaning with lemon and salt
Lemon and salt can be used to remove light layer of brass. Apply some salt on half a lemon and rub it slowly on the brass surface. The acidity of the lemon helps loosen deposits, while the salt helps remove dirt with gentle friction. After cleaning, wash the utensil with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth.
Remove stubborn stains with vinegar and baking soda
If the black spots on brass are old, make a paste of white vinegar and baking soda and apply it on the affected area and leave it for a few minutes. Then clean gently with a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid rubbing too hard, as this may scratch the brass surface. After cleaning, it is necessary to wash the vessel thoroughly with water and dry it immediately.
cleaning with tamarind
Tamarind has also been used for cleaning brass since ancient times. Apply tamarind pulp on the affected area and leave it for some time. Then rub it gently with a soft cloth and clean it with water. The natural acids present in tamarind can help loosen the tarnish deposited on the surface.
Flour, Salt and Vinegar Paste
If there is a lot of dirt or tarnish on the brass, make a thick paste of flour, salt and vinegar and apply it on the brass and leave it for some time. Then clean it with a soft cloth and wash it with water. This method can be useful on old utensils, puja objects and decorative brass items.
Using toothpaste on light dirt
If there is only a light tarnish layer on the brass, ordinary white toothpaste can be used. Apply it on a soft cloth and rub the surface gently. Then wash with clean water and wipe thoroughly with a dry cloth.
Along with cleaning, proper storage is also important to maintain the shine of brass.
• Dry brass utensils immediately after washing.
• Do not leave them in water or moisture for a long time.
• Avoid rough scrubbers and strong chemicals.
• Keep the items in a dry place.
• If not to be used for a long time, keep it wrapped in a soft cloth.
• Before cleaning, test any home remedy on a small area.
If the brass has any special coatings, engravings or old finishes, it is best to take extra precautions before using home acidic remedies. With proper cleaning and regular care, the shine of old brass items can be maintained for a long time.
