Formation of new team
New Delhi – The Central Government has reconstituted the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Many famous personalities from the fields of film, television, music, literature and art have been included in this new arrangement. These new appointments will come into effect immediately and the tenure of the members will be for a maximum of three years.

The new board includes prominent names like Manoj Joshi, Priyadarshan, Sunil Shetty, Preity Zinta, Pankaj Tripathi and Prosenjit Chatterjee. Apart from this, musician Ricky Cage, actor and MP Hansraj Hans, actress Rupali Ganguly, filmmaker Neela Madhab Panda, actresses Pallavi Joshi and Nishigandha Wad have also been made members. Other members include Vinod Anupam, Abhishek Jain, Supriya Yarlagadda, Yatindra Mishra, Vaman Kendre and Ramesh Patange. Shashi Shekhar Vempati was appointed CBFC Chairman in May 2026, with a tenure of three years.

What is the work of CBFC?
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is a statutory body functioning under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It is mandatory for any film in India to obtain certification from the CBFC before it can be screened publicly. This board has been established under the Cinematograph Act, 1952. After reviewing the content of a film, it is awarded a prescribed certificate. The certification process includes categories like U, UA, A and S. 'U' is suitable for audiences of all ages, while 'A' is for adult audiences.

How does a film get certificate?
Filmmakers can apply for certification through CBFC's online e-Cinepramaan system. The content of the film is examined as per the prescribed rules and guidelines. If necessary, modifications or reductions in the certification process may be sought. According to the government, the maximum deadline for film certification under the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024 is 48 working days. In February 2026, the government reported that on average, certification for feature films takes about 18 working days and for short films, it takes about 3 working days. With this new formation, CBFC has increased the participation of people associated with various fields of entertainment and arts, who will be involved in the certification process related to public exhibition of films.
