He is known as the world's most famous investor but is stepping down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway.
Announcing the decision in a letter to shareholders
He has been leading this $1 trillion company since 1965. The 96-year-old investment veteran announced his decision in a letter to shareholders on September 18. In a separate announcement, the company said Buffett will become chairman emeritus effective immediately, but will remain a director on the board.
Berkshire explained that his son, Howard Buffett, would succeed him as chairman as part of a long-term succession plan. Susan Decker will continue as lead independent director.

On behalf of Berkshire's board of directors, Chief Executive Officer Greg Abel said, “Warren's impact on Berkshire and its owners is unparalleled in the history of American business. “As chairman emeritus, Mr. Buffett will continue as a member of the board of directors and will continue to contribute his valuable opinions and perspectives,” Berkshire said in a statement. Last year, Buffett announced that he would be stepping down as CEO.
