Automobile Desk – Mahindra Mini Scorpio: The dominance of SUV segment is continuously increasing in the Indian automobile market and keeping this in mind, the leading automobile manufacturer Mahindra is working on its new strategy. Mahindra is soon planning to launch two new vehicles in the Sub-4 Meter segment, which can be launched around 2027 and 2028. The most talked about among these is the new compact SUV based on Mahindra's Vision S concept, whose testing is going on rapidly on the roads of the country.
This new SUV is being built on Mahindra's brand new NU_IQ modular platform. Its main objective is to bring that powerful, muscular and rough-and-tough style of the Scorpio brand to the customers in low budget and small size.
Powerful exterior and boxy look
It is clear from the pictures revealed during testing that the look of this new SUV has been kept largely similar to its concept model. Its upright and boxy silhouette gives it a strong road presence like a traditional SUV with a ladder-frame chassis, while it will actually be based on a modern modular platform.
At the rear of the car, thin LED tail lamps have been provided on the side of the rear windscreen, whose appearance is reminiscent of the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio-N. The spare wheel (Stepney) is mounted on the tailgate and it gets a side-hinged rear door. Additionally, the raised squarish wheel arches, flush-type door handles, straight pillars and large 16-inch alloy wheels give its side profile a sporty look.
Premium cabin and modern features
Talking about the cabin, Mahindra's new interior layout will be seen in this SUV based on Vision S. According to spy shots, it can have two different 10.25-inch screens, one of which will be for the touchscreen infotainment system and the other for the digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system will work on the company's latest Adrenox software.
Physical climate control dials and aircraft-style toggle switches are provided on the dashboard of the vehicle which gives it a tech-savvy feel. Its key features include panoramic sunroof, electronic parking brake (EPB) with auto-hold, wireless phone charger, drive modes and leatherette steering wheel. In terms of safety and convenience, it is expected to get modern safety features like ventilated front seats, level-2 ADAS technology, 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and hill-start assist.
Engine options and hybrid technology
This Mini Scorpio can get 1.2-litre mStallion turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine options. Mahindra's new NU_IQ platform supports petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains. It is also discussed that Mahindra is also preparing a new hybrid system with 1.2-liter petrol engine, which can be included in this vehicle in future.
Launch timeline and competition
The company will sell this SUV along with its existing XUV 3XO as a lifestyle and rough-and-tough option. In the Indian market, it will compete directly with the upcoming new SUVs of Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Renault. It is estimated that it could be officially launched during the India Mobility Global Expo to be held in early 2027.
