Mahindra has recently launched the updated Thar OG 3-door SUV at a starting ex-showroom price of ₹10.32 lakh. On the other hand, the Thar ROXX is a 5-door SUV that starts at ₹12.52 lakh. While both cars share the same base body-on-frame and 4×4 DNA, the user experience and customer needs are different.
Thar OG: A compact and off-road-centric option
The Thar OG gets a 3-door and 4-seater layout. Updates such as the new M_Glyde 4G platform, Rear Pentalink suspension, Electric Power Steering and Electronic Locking Differential enhance the off-road capabilities along with daily driving. Its compact size makes its small dimensions useful on narrow trails and tough off-road routes.

The Thar ROXX gets 5 doors and a 5-seater cabin. The long wheelbase offers more legroom for rear passengers and the 447-litre boot space makes it easy to store luggage too. Its design is more practical for daily office commutes, family use and long highway journeys thanks to rear AC vents and a more usable rear seat.

The Thar OG is available in 2.0-litre mStallion petrol, 1.5-litre and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel options. After the update, the 2.0-litre petrol offers around 330 Nm of torque, while the 2.2-litre diesel offers 330 Nm of torque. The Thar ROXX is also available with 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines.

So which one for whom??
If your use will be mostly for weekend off-roading, adventure trips and carrying relatively few passengers, the Thar OG's 3-door layout and compact size are worth considering. If there is a mix of daily use with the family, office commute, regular back seat passengers and long drives, the 5-door design, more cabin space and larger boot in the Thar ROXX come in handy. Mahindra also positions both models for different usage needs.
