Adani Group plans Rs 1 lakh crore Bengal investment

Kolkata: The Adani Group has announced plans to invest more than Rs 1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035, marking a major expansion across infrastructure, energy, logistics and digital sectors. Group chairman Gautam Adani made the announcement on Thursday while laying the foundation stone for the proposed Adani Arogya Mandir in New Town, Kolkata.

The broader investment plan is expected to cover ports, logistics, power generation, transmission and distribution, roads, bridges, green cement and hyperscale data centres. Adani said West Bengal’s location gives it significant potential as a maritime and logistics link between India’s industrial regions, the Northeast, the Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia.

Adani described the planned investment as a long-term commitment to Bengal and said the state could become the group’s second “Karmabhoomi” in the eastern part of the country.

Rs 4,000 crore medical hub planned in New Town

The first major component of the new commitment is the Adani Arogya Mandir, a proposed not-for-profit healthcare and medical education complex in New Town.

The group plans to invest more than Rs 4,000 crore in the project, which will have a capacity of 2,000 beds. The facility will include a multi-speciality hospital, medical college and advanced medical research facilities.

Of the planned 2,000 beds, 1,000 will be reserved for economically weaker sections eligible under state and central government health insurance schemes, according to the details announced for the project.

The healthcare facility is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs across West Bengal’s healthcare ecosystem, including through the hospital, medical college and associated research activities.

Adani said the investment in healthcare was part of the group’s wider commitment to the state, with the larger infrastructure programme intended to expand economic opportunities across Bengal.

Focus on ports, power and infrastructure

The Adani Group’s planned investments will extend beyond healthcare.

Ports and maritime logistics are expected to form a significant part of the group’s plans, with West Bengal’s coastline providing access to important domestic and international trade routes. The group also intends to invest in power generation, transmission and distribution to support industrial activity.

Roads, bridges, logistics infrastructure, green cement and hyperscale data centres have also been identified as areas for investment.

Adani highlighted Bengal’s geographical position as one of its major advantages, arguing that the state can play a larger role in connecting India’s industrial heartland with the Northeast and maritime trade routes.

He also said the state has considerable potential for creating quality employment if capital investment is supported by modern infrastructure.

Adani Arogya Mandir to combine healthcare and research

The proposed medical hub is designed to combine treatment, medical education and research under one institution.

The foundation stone ceremony was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Adani performed the foundation-laying ceremony along with his wife Priti Adani and son Karan Adani.

The project is being positioned as a not-for-profit institution, with the allocation of half its planned beds to economically weaker patients forming a central part of its stated healthcare model.

The medical college and research facilities are also expected to contribute to the development of healthcare professionals and advanced medical research in the region.

Bengal positioned as a long-term growth hub

Adani said West Bengal’s industrial and cultural legacy, combined with its geographical location, gives it the potential to play a larger role in India’s economic development.

The Rs 4,000 crore-plus healthcare project is the immediate visible component of the much larger investment plan. Over the next decade, the Adani Group’s proposed capital deployment is expected to span infrastructure, energy, logistics, healthcare and digital infrastructure.

The group has set 2035 as the target year for deploying more than Rs 1 lakh crore across these sectors, making the announcement one of its largest stated investment commitments to West Bengal.
