For a few hours, it seemed like Lonzo Ball might have walked away from basketball. In reality, at least for now, that is not the case. After some of his comments resurfaced on social media, the former Bulls guard himself stepped in to clarify the situation.
It all started with an excerpt from a podcast in which Lonzo discussed his relationship with basketball using words that, when heard out of context, could indeed have sounded like a farewell.
A message of gratitude for the journey he has taken, but one that many interpreted as some kind of early retirement announcement.
Lonzo Ball: “Retired? I’m still waiting for a call”
Lonzo himself immediately put the rumors to rest on Xwith a rather clear and, above all, humorous response.
Did I retire? That’s news to me too… I’m still waiting for a call… the NBA season is long
Lonzo Ball
No farewell, then. Lonzo is still waiting to find out whether a new opportunity in the NBA will come his way and, at least based on his own words, does not consider his career over yet.
After nine seasons and a career inevitably marked by physical issues as well, Ball appears to have simply entered a different phase of his career: he does not have a team yet, but the door to an NBA return remains open.
And knowing how much a season can change with injuries, trades, and rosters still being filled out, Lonzo appears intent on waiting. For now, the message is pretty simple: retirement can wait, just as he waits for that call.
