Let's find out what's new in these RBI changes and how it will affect FD interest rates.
Are FD rules going to change?
The rules regarding large deposits have been revised as per RBI's new rules. Large deposits mean deposits of ₹3 crore or more. The new rule aims to give banks more flexibility in fixing interest rates on large deposits. Also, it has been emphasized that the information about the deposit interest rates offered by the banks will be easily available to the customers.
FD interest rates must be published on the website
From October 1, 2026, banks will be required to display information about interest rates offered on deposits on their websites. This will also include interest rates on large deposits. Banks are required to update the interest rates applicable to large deposits by 10:00 am on each working day. A time limit of 10 minutes has been fixed for this, and this update must be completed by 10:10 AM.
Will FD interest rates be affected?
This new rule is most applicable for large deposits. So, if you have an FD of a few thousand, lakhs or a modest amount, these changes alone will not directly affect your FD interest rate.
But banks decide their deposit rates based on market and individual needs. Therefore, different banks may offer different interest rates for the same tenure FD. This allows banks to offer different interest rates for customers with large deposits.
