Security was heavily reinforced, and traffic restrictions were enforced across central Delhi on Tuesday as the opposition INDIA bloc moved forward with its planned protest march from Parliament to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters.
The demonstration aims to protest alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and press demands for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
According to sources, the march was slated to commence following the assembly of opposition MPs. However, police maintained that no formal permission had been granted for the demonstration.
Extensive Security Deployment and Traffic Diversions
To manage potential disruptions, approximately 4,000 personnel from the Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed across the New Delhi district. Barricades and security cordons have been established at sensitive junctions, particularly around Parliament and the ECI office.
The Delhi Traffic Police implemented widespread regulations and diversions starting early in the morning across key areas, including:
- Connaught Place and Patel Chowk
- Parliament Street and the Patel Chowk-GPO stretch
- Windsor Place-GPO, Ashoka Road, and Jantar Mantar Road
Commuters have been strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel through central Delhi, utilise public transport—particularly the Delhi Metro—and heed advisories issued by traffic personnel.
The high-security alert follows weeks of mounting political friction and demonstrations in the national capital over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. While opposition leaders maintained that their march would remain entirely peaceful, law enforcement agencies remained on high alert to maintain public order and prevent gridlock across arterial routes.
