Tony Dungy has opened up about his departure from NBC Sports, saying he had a feeling his time on Football Night in America was coming to an end before the network formally informed him. In the Tony Dungy NBC exit interview, the Pro Football Hall of Famer also addressed whether his outspoken Christian faith played a role in the decision.
Dungy revealed the details in a preview of an upcoming appearance on The Sage Steele Show. NBC announced earlier this year that Dungy would not return to Football Night in America for the 2026 NFL season after spending 17 years with the network.

Dungy said NBC approached him and longtime colleague Rodney Harrison about plans to refresh the programme and bring in younger voices.
“I kind of knew that was going to be the case,” Dungy said in the interview, explaining that NBC told the pair it wanted to get younger and change the voices on the show.
The former Indianapolis Colts coach described the decision as difficult but familiar, drawing a comparison with previous changes in his football career.
Dungy officially confirmed his departure on March 12, thanking NBC for what he described as 17 special years. He said at the time that he was unsure whether his next step would involve football, broadcasting, church work or community outreach.
Dungy addresses faith and NBC departure
The discussion then turned to Dungy’s public comments about his Christian faith and whether they could have influenced NBC’s decision.
Dungy acknowledged that television networks want to appeal to a broad audience and said there are subjects broadcasters may be expected to approach carefully.
“There are some things that in TV especially, they want you to be careful because they want to attract everybody,” Dungy said.
He added that he would continue speaking about his beliefs respectfully and would not hide his Christian identity.
However, Dungy stopped short of claiming that his faith was the reason for his NBC exit. When asked directly whether he believed that was the deciding factor, he replied that he did not know and said it ultimately did not matter to him.
He also said NBC knew who he was when he was hired, making clear that his beliefs were not something he had suddenly introduced during his broadcasting career.
What happened to Football Night in America?
Dungy joined NBC in 2009 following his retirement from coaching and became a familiar presence on Football Night in America. His departure was part of a wider restructuring of NBC’s NFL studio coverage.
The network subsequently brought in former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as an analyst. The 2026 edition of Football Night in America features Maria Taylor alongside Tomlin, Jason Garrett, Devin McCourty and Mike Florio.
Tony Dungy Career
Dungy has already begun exploring life beyond NBC. In September, he announced his Road to Sunday media brand, giving him a new platform to continue discussing football, players and subjects important to him.
The full Sage Steele Show interview is scheduled to be released on October 14.
