Several Delhi Police personnel have alleged that they were punched, kicked and assaulted while trying to control a crowd during the Congress-led INDIA bloc protest against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the national capital.
Speaking to IANS, Delhi Police constables, including women personnel, recounted their alleged ordeal during the protest, saying they were attacked while performing their duties and attempting to prevent the crowd from moving beyond the permitted area.
Constable Deependra Sandhu said he was assaulted while trying to control protesters on Wednesday.
“They deliberately targeted us because we were informing everyone that Section 163 was in force in the area and that they could not protest here. Suddenly, they went behind us and pulled us from behind. They then pushed us to the ground and started kicking and punching us. We somehow managed to protect ourselves and get away,” he said.
Sandhu said he later saw the person who allegedly attacked him fleeing from the protest site.
“The man who pulled me down from behind and kicked me was wearing white clothes,” he said.
Head Constable Bhupendra Ahlawat also alleged that he was attacked while wearing his police uniform. He described the incident as a planned assault, claiming that the alleged attacker was provided an escape route by protesters.
“I am the one who was kicked. They intentionally and deliberately pulled me from behind by my waist and made me fall,” Ahlawat said.
He alleged that when he turned around and made eye contact with the attacker, other protesters hid the person and helped him leave through the green area at the center of the roundabout.
Woman Constable Seema said she was injured during the protest at Akashvani Bhavan while police were detaining legislators.
“It is our duty to follow the instructions given by our officers. At that time, we do not pay attention to whether we are getting injured. I realized only later that I had been injured,” she said.
Seema said the legislators being detained were among those sitting with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi.
According to reports, Delhi Police have registered multiple FIRs over alleged misbehaviour, manhandling and assault of police personnel during the protests.
The police personnel said they continued to follow security protocols and attempted to maintain order despite the challenging circumstances.
The allegations regarding the identity and conduct of the protesters involved are subject to investigation.
