Nagaon by-election: BJP at the lead, AIUDF at second place and Congress at third place.

Devashish Sharma got more than 2.26 lakh votes – AIUDF’s Badruddin Ajmal was in second place – BJP’s performance in minority dominated seats also in discussion.

Nagaon. The counting of votes for the by-election in Nagaon Lok Sabha seat of Assam started on Friday morning. In the trends till 12 noon, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a decisive lead. At the same time, Congress has suffered a major setback and the party has slipped to third place. All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) remains at the second position.

According to the data released by the Election Commission, BJP candidate Devashish Sharma has received 2,26,491 votes so far. AIUDF candidate Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is in second place with 1,49,487 votes. Whereas, Congress candidate Shibamoni Bora has got 38,437 votes. 2,890 votes have been recorded in favor of NOTA.

A total of 15 candidates including BJP, Congress and AIUDF are in the fray in this by-election. Till the last available information, a total of 4,14,526 votes had been counted. According to the data, BJP got 53.22 percent votes, AIUDF got 35.13 percent votes and Congress got 9.03 percent votes. At the same time, 0.68 percent voters have chosen the option of NOTA.

Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency has a total of eight assembly constituencies, out of which four are considered minority dominated. This time in the by-elections, BJP’s performance in these areas also remains a topic of discussion. As per the available trends, BJP has been in first or second position in terms of securing votes even in minority dominated seats.

Generally, the performance of Congress or AIUDF has been better in these areas. In such a situation, Congress slipping to third place is being seen as an important change in the electoral equations. However, the election picture will be completely clear only after the final results of vote counting come.
