Caring for Fresh Green Vegetables
When people buy fresh spinach, coriander, fenugreek and lettuce, they often keep them straight in the refrigerator. But within a few days these leaves start withering, their color fades and they become soft. Sometimes vegetables spoil so quickly that it becomes difficult to use them.
In fact, not only the temperature of the refrigerator but also the way of storing them is important in maintaining the freshness of green leafy vegetables. By correcting some small mistakes, vegetables can be kept fresh for a long time.
1. Do not keep wet vegetables in a closed container
If there is excess water left in green leafy vegetables after they are washed and immediately stored in a closed bag or container, moisture may accumulate. This can cause stickiness on the leaves and increase the risk of their early spoilage.
Therefore, drain the excess water thoroughly after washing the vegetables. Dry them gently with clean paper or kitchen towel and keep them in a suitable container.
2. Ways to keep coriander and fenugreek fresh
Delicate leafy vegetables like coriander and fenugreek can wilt quickly. Before keeping them in the refrigerator, remove yellow, rotten or damaged leaves. After this, keep them lightly in a clean, dry container and use clean paper that absorbs moisture as per need.
Keep in mind that if the paper becomes too wet, change it. Leaving vegetables completely uncovered can also cause their moisture to lose rapidly.
3. Do not press spinach and other leaves
To save space in the fridge, many people pack vegetables in small boxes. Due to this, the leaves can break and get spoiled quickly due to compression.
Allow enough space for spinach, lettuce and other delicate vegetables. Avoid placing heavy boxes or other vegetables on top of them.
4. Remove bad leaves immediately
If you notice yellow, slimy or sticky leaves in a bunch of vegetables, separate them immediately. Leaving spoiled parts with the rest of the vegetables can increase losses.
Keep checking the vegetables kept in the fridge from time to time and give priority to those which need to be used first. If mold or rot is visible on the leaves, avoid eating them.
5. Choose the right place for vegetables in the fridge
Overfilling the fridge can make it difficult to keep vegetables organized. Due to this, the leaves get pressed and it is not easy to check them.
Keep green vegetables in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator, where available. Generally keeping the refrigerator temperature around 4°C or less is appropriate for food safety. However, vegetables should also be protected from freezing.
6. Buy vegetables only as per requirement
How many days vegetables will remain fresh also depends on their initial quality, storage before purchase and the way they are kept at home. Therefore, instead of buying more spinach, coriander or fenugreek than required, buy only that much quantity which can be used in a few days.
to bear in mind: It is important to protect green leafy vegetables from both excess moisture and complete drying. Proper cleaning, removing excess water, proper packing and checking from time to time can help maintain their freshness.
