I made a big mistake by supporting the Election Commission law: This statement of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy heated up the politics of Andhra Pradesh

There was a huge stir in the Indian political circles when former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has openly expressed regret over one of his old decisions. Jagan Mohan Reddy has publicly admitted that his party had made a big mistake by supporting the controversial Election Commission Appointment Amendment Act related to the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other election commissioners in the year 2023. After this revelation, a debate has once again erupted at the national level regarding the country's electoral system and selection process. Jagan Mohan Reddy has strongly advocated reintroduction of the old system to restore a fair, transparent and free election process in the country. Let us know what other big revelations Jagan Mohan Reddy has made in his statement and what is the political meaning behind it.

"We made a mistake, deeply regret supporting the Election Commission Act of 2023"

Addressing an important press conference and political meeting, YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy candidly said that when his party supported the 2023 Amendment Bill in Parliament, perhaps they could not foresee its far-reaching and negative consequences. He admitted in clear words, "Earlier the YSRCP had supported this process allowing the ruling party to make appointments of its own choice. But looking back today, we realize that giving that support was a big mistake on our part and we deeply regret it."

Jagan Mohan Reddy gave a very precise and effective example to make his point more clear. He said, "The examiner of the examination can never be appointed by the student taking the examination." His indication was clear that if the same government which itself is contesting the elections decides who will be the officials conducting the elections, then how can fairness be expected. He also added that if the selection process is not conducted by an independent and impartial body, then the functioning of even the most honest Election Commissioner of the country becomes unnecessarily questioned and he has to face public criticism. What was that Amendment Act of 2023 and why is there opposition? The Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act brought by the Central Government in the year 2023 had changed the entire nature of the selection process of the country. Under this new law, a provision was made that the top officials of the Election Commission would be selected by a high-powered committee. This committee consists of the Prime Minister (who is its Chairman), a cabinet minister nominated by the Prime Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (or the leader of the largest opposition party). However, the biggest change made in this new law was that the Chief Justice of India (CJI), who was an integral and impartial part of the earlier system, was excluded from this selection panel. Opposition parties and lawmakers have always argued that the removal of the CJI gives the ruling party an upper hand in the entire process and impartiality is affected, to which now the YSRCP chief has also given his seal of approval. Demand raised to restore the old impartial system of CJI in the country. Jagan Mohan Reddy has put forth a demand before the present government that if democracy is to be saved in the country and public trust in the impartiality of the Election Commission is to be maintained, then this law should be amended immediately. He demanded that the old and transparent system of appointment of election commissioners should be brought back, in which the presence of the Chief Justice of the country (CJI) was mandatory along with the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Political experts believe that it is a big political step for a top leader of a regional party to question the Central law in this way and accept his past mistake. Through this, an attempt has been made to convey the message that the independence of electoral institutions is much bigger and more important than the immediate gains of any political party. Serious questions raised on the appointment of State Election Commissioners (SEC) Not only the Central Election Commission, but Jagan Mohan Reddy also took the current governments to task regarding the appointments made at the state level. He said that just as there is a need for reform at the Centre, similarly there is a strong need to make radical changes in the appointment process of State Election Commissioners. He argued, "Under no circumstances should the power to appoint the State Election Commission be in the hands of the Chief Minister or the directly ruling State Government. Appointments to such constitutional and independent posts should always be made by an impartial and neutral institution or authority, so that transparency is maintained even in local elections."

Sharp attack on Andhra Pradesh local body elections and TDP government During his address, Jagan Mohan Reddy also mentioned the current politics and local body election process of his home state Andhra Pradesh. He seriously accused the Chandrababu Naidu-led NDA (TDP-JSP-BJP) government in power in the state of strangulating democracy. Reddy alleged that YSRCP candidates were deprived of their democratic rights during the local body elections and were stopped from even filing nominations. He claimed that nomination papers of his party workers were forcibly snatched away, they were violently attacked and candidates were intimidated. He alleged that the state police and administrative officials were working under pressure from the ruling party and had completely failed to ensure a level playing field for all political parties. After this statement, there are full chances of increasing tension in the politics of Andhra Pradesh.
