A very premature baby girl in Nawanshahr, Punjab, has won the battle for life after receiving specialized medical care and constant treatment. Born at just 27 weeks of gestation, the baby weighed just 700 grams at birth. Her condition became critical immediately after birth, but after nearly 50 days of specialized treatment in the NICU, she was discharged from the hospital in good health.
The Punjab government’s “Chief Minister’s Health Scheme” played a crucial role in this treatment. Under the scheme, the girl’s treatment, costing approximately ₹3 lakh, was completely cashless, saving the family the burden of heavy medical expenses.
Severe breathing problems after birth
According to reports, the baby girl was born to Suraj and his wife, residents of Shiv Shankar Mohalla, Nawanshahr, on June 9, 2026. Due to being born nearly three months premature, the baby’s lungs were not fully developed.
Immediately after birth, she developed severe respiratory problems. Doctors immediately admitted her to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a listed private hospital. During the initial days, the baby was placed on a ventilator and her condition was monitored continuously.
Special treatment lasted for 50 days
Dr. Hartesh Singh Pahwa, who is treating the girl, said that babies born at 27 weeks are extremely fragile. Such babies require 24-hour expert supervision and advanced medical facilities.
He said the girl was provided with proper nutrition, infection prevention, and constant medical monitoring. During her treatment, the team of doctors monitored her health changes continuously. Gradually, the girl’s condition improved, and after approximately 50 days of specialized care, she was discharged from the hospital.
Cashless treatment brought great relief to the family
The girl’s father, Suraj, said that it would have been extremely difficult for the family to afford the nearly 3 lakh rupees worth of treatment. He said that he had felt fear and anxiety about his daughter’s condition at times, but the efforts of the doctors and the support of the plan gave him hope.
Suraj said that without the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme, it would have been impossible for them to afford such expensive treatment. Thanks to the scheme, the family was able to focus on the girl’s health instead of worrying about hospital bills.
Health Minister told the scheme is important
Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh said that no family should be forced to choose between saving a life and raising money for treatment.
He said that every mother should have access to safe delivery and every newborn should have access to quality medical care. According to him, the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme aims to provide timely, quality healthcare services while freeing people from financial worries.
Thousands of newborns benefited from the treatment.
According to data from the state health agency, 1,869 children have benefited from the Special Neonatal Care Package over the past seven months. Claims for treatment of 1,719 newborns have been approved under the Intensive Neonatal Care Package.
A total of over ₹6.28 crore was spent on newborn care in these two categories. Additionally, life-saving treatment was provided to many critically ill children under the Advanced and Critical Neonatal Care Package.
The healthy return of this girl from Nawanshahr is being considered an important example of the combined efforts of timely treatment, expert medical care and financial assistance.
