A big decision of the Central Government, new rules come into effect from July 1
New Delhi. There is big news for people preparing to travel abroad. The central government has changed the fees related to passport. After the implementation of the new rules, one will have to pay more than before for getting a general passport made and for its re-issue. The Ministry of External Affairs has fixed new fees by amending the Passport Rules, 1980. These new rates will be applicable from July 1, 2026.
Increase in general passport fees
According to the new rule, the application fee for general passport with 36 pages has been increased. Now the normal application fee for this has been increased from ₹ 1500 to ₹ 2500. Whereas the Tatkal service charge has been increased from ₹3500 to ₹5000. This fee will be applicable on making new passports as well as re-issuance of old passports.
Rates changed for 60 page passport also
The fees for passports with more pages i.e. 60 pages have also been revised. Under this, the normal application fee will increase from ₹ 2000 to ₹ 3500 and the instant application fee will increase from ₹ 4000 to ₹ 6000.
Which people will be affected?
The new fee will have a direct impact on those people who are getting their passport made for the first time, are renewing their passport after its validity has ended, and want to get a passport quickly through Tatkal service. Especially the applicants seeking immediate service will now have to pay more than before.
Government issued new arrangement
According to the notification of the Ministry of External Affairs, the Central Government has changed the passport rules under the Passport Act, 1967. The amended rules will be implemented by the name of Passport (Amendment) Rules, 2026. Along with this, a new fee schedule has also been released.
