A glimpse of Indian culture in space, Bihu dance on the space station goes viral

New Delhi. When a glimpse of Earth’s culture is seen in the emptiness of space, that moment becomes special in itself. One such unique scene was witnessed when Mike Finke surprised everyone by performing a Bihu dance on the International Space Station (ISS). In this video going viral on social media, Finke is seen wearing a traditional Assamese ‘gamosa’ and dancing to the tune of a Bihu song. Interestingly, Finke also has a personal connection with Assam. His wife Renita Saikia is from Assam, which makes this performance even more emotionally and culturally significant. Seeing a glimpse of Indian folk culture in such a scientific environment like space has become a matter of pride for people.

CM Sarma praised, said Assam’s culture gets global respect.
Praising this unique performance, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the video on the social media platform ‘X’. He wrote with the tag ‘Bihu Binandiya’ that watching Bihu dance in the International Space Station is a proud moment for Assam’s culture. Sarma described Finke’s effort as a tribute to Assamese tradition and said that after the special attention given to Bihu by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this festival is now getting global recognition. It is noteworthy that every year in Assam, the New Year is welcomed with great enthusiasm on the occasion of Rongali Bihu and this festival has become the identity of the state.

This is not the first time Mike Fincke has showcased Indian culture in space
. He has previously shared a video of Bihu dance during one of his space travels. Fincke, who has been a part of four space missions, completed his most recent flight in mid-January. Although, it has not been officially confirmed when this new viral video was recorded. Nevertheless, this video is rapidly gaining popularity on social media and people are seeing it as a unique confluence of culture and science.

“Bihu Binandiya” sets world record, PM Modi witnesses it
The enthusiasm for Bihu in Assam can be gauged from the fact that in April 2023, approximately 10,000 artists performed “Bihu Binandiya” together in Guwahati, setting a world record. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present at this historic event. Now that the echoes of Bihu have reached space, it would not be wrong to say that this traditional art of Assam is scaling new heights on the global stage.
