Aamir Khan: 25 years after Lagaan, will Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowarikar be collaborating again for a sports film?:
Aamir Khan: There are some films that never leave Bollywood fans. More than two decades later, just hearing the words “yes” or seeing a dusty cricket pitch is enough to bring back memories of Lagaan. The film wasn’t just a sports drama; it became a cultural moment, transforming village cricket into cinematic magic and giving audiences one of Hindi cinema’s most illustrious collaborations between Aamir Khan and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker. Now, 25 years later, the two are set to work together again.
According to reports, Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker are reuniting for a new cricket movie inspired by the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath. Script work has begun, and shooting is expected to begin around September 2026.
Unlike Lagaan, the upcoming film is said to be rooted in history and set around the time of the Partition of India in 1947. Reports claim that the story will trace the life and journey of Lala Amarnath, while cricket is said to be the backbone of the story.
Several reports also suggest that the script is already complete. Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi may also be involved with the film. For many fans, the biggest excitement is seeing Aamir return to the cricket genre after Lagaan, one of the most celebrated sports dramas in Indian cinema. Released in 2001, the film earned global recognition.
Aamir Khan’s upcoming film is expected to begin production in late 2026. After completing this project, the actor will next be seen alongside Shraddha Kapoor in filmmaker Rahul Modi’s startup-themed film. Aamir is also being linked to a sequel to 3 Idiots. Reports suggest that production could begin in mid-2027.
