Accident in Afghanistan, 18 refugees died when truck overturned while returning from Pakistan

Officials said that this accident happened on a highway in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday. According to the information, a truck carrying Afghan refugees returning from neighboring country Pakistan overturned. At least 18 people died in this accident, while 35 others were injured. There were mostly women and children in it.

Abdul Malik Niazai, spokesman for the provincial governor, said the accident occurred in Laghman province on the main highway connecting Kabul with Nangarhar province. He said the dead included 10 children and five women and the injured were taken to hospitals in Nangarhar for treatment. Meanwhile, Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid expressed deep sorrow over this incident. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

According to the information, these passengers were among the thousands of Afghans who had recently returned from Pakistan. Pakistan began a crackdown on illegal immigrants in 2023 and has since deported many people or forced them to leave the country. Around the same time, Iran also stepped up the process of expelling Afghan immigrants. Since then, millions of Afghans have returned to their homes from both countries, including many who were born in Pakistan and had lived and worked there for decades.
